Max was no different than any other first-born son who was able to cause mischief and charm their way out of punishment with a winning smile. Though his parents loved and adored him they simply overlooked his stubborn nature as "boys being boys" - a mistake they wouldn't live to regret. Max was the latest in a line of powerful witches and gifted with the ability of transmogrification. Being that he was always used to getting what he desired his magick was treated as no more than an early Christmas present. This is when the Elders began to worry from the heavens.

As he grew older Max and his younger brother Matthew Johnson eventually began to save their own innocents. They made a remarkable team with their unique abilities, but their bond as brothers was stronger than the magick flowing through their veins. Max was able to talk his little brother in anything and Matt naively followed. Despite their thick as thieves bond as they grew older their parents immediately took notice to how different they were and didn't think, before comparing good-natured Matt to fiercely rebellious Max. That was when the dam began to crack, but it would only take promises of great power from a gorgeous demon for it break. When faced with a life or death situation Max helped a demon kill an innocent that he was meant to protect, so that Matt's life would be spared. His decision might have been for Matt's benefit, but soon enough he began on a downward spiral that would cause him to become consumed by the darkness in his soul. It wasn't long, before Max killed his own father and became the most feared warlock in all of the underworld.

After several years of striking fear in the hearts of witches and innocents alike the sins of Max's past began to catch up with him. It only took being reunited with his long lost brother turned San Francisco Inspector that he reflected on his life. While he yearned to share the bond that he'd once had with his brother Max's hunger for the Charmed Ones powers was far stronger. After many failed attempts to steal both the Book of Shadows and the gifts of the Charmed Ones he lured his own brother to his side with a white lie of wanting find redemption. He didn't realize it at first, but as he spent more time with his soul began to brighten and all of the sins of his past became dramatically clear. Soon after Paige discovered that Matt was helping Max by holding a valuable weapon all hell broke loose. Once Max's most trusted ally the Oracle in her coniving nature wasn't going to settle for him leaving all that she'd worked to help him gain. She weaved a twisted web of lies that confused everyone and was only broken with Max sacrificing his life to save the love of his brother's life. Paige.

Max's life made yet another dramatic curve as he was saved from the ninth layer of hell to serve the greater good as a whitelighter. Not just any whitelighter, but the whitelighter of the Charmed Ones.
